I introduced Joan to hiking with a short and gentle hike in Whiting Ranch.

How long is Whiting Ranch hike?

“Try this 5.9-mile loop trail near Foothill Ranch, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 30 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and horseback riding, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.”

Lesson Learned - Do Not Hike Alone

For our next hike I drove her to the trailhead in Modjeska Canyon. There is a nature preserve and museum at the trailhead.  Together over 3 hikes we progressively made closer to the top Santiago Peak.  For various reasons by this time I had enough with hiking.  Joan became hooked on the feeling of achievement as she on her own would go weekly on her quest to make it to the top.  While hiking alone she had a heart issue and had to be airlifted off the mountain.  The mountain she was fond of saying “my mountain”.  From that point forward Joan retained a Cardiologist.
